Jujutsu (soft or pliant art) was developed by the samurai in feudal Japan. Its emphasis on joint locking and throwing techniques made it a formidable tool on the battlefield, enabling unarmed samurai to disarm and dispatch weapon wielding enemies. Jujutsu techniques are known for using an opponent's own energy and strength against them, while also utilizing strikes, pins, and chokes to compliment its extensive repertoire of joint locks and throws.
The Greendale Family Branch YMCA Jujutsu class teaches students efficient movement and body use through the study of traditional self-defense techniques. The underlying principles and mechanics that make techniques work are explored regularly. Practice includes rolling and falling, footwork, blocking and receiving skills, and releases from grabs. Basic weapon handling and defenses utilizing the bokken (wooden sword), jo (four foot staff), tanto (wooden knife), club, etc. are also covered.
Classes are held Tuesday and Thursday nights from 7:30–9:00pm.
The class is free to YMCA members and only
$49 per 8-week session for non-members.
Participants must be 16 years of age or older.
